Community Tasting Notes 9

  • Eudemis Likes this wine:

February 21, 2022 - 13% alcohol. The cork is of average length and far from free of defects, but the wine penetration is minimal, so job done. Pale translucent colour with significant fading and the onset of bricking at the edge of the rim.
Very good nose with decayed leaves and the remnant of red berries; the oak is perceptible but it adds to the richness and complexity of the wine. The mouth is a step behind because the acidity is a tad too much in evidence; still very pleasing with good complexity and a sweet finish (no sugary note implied).
Very good overall, but still a slight disappointment given the stellar reputation of the plot.
The repeat purchase question does not arise, I can see no value for money in Côte de Nuits at this stage, and the contagion is now affecting wider Burgundy as well.

November 14, 2021 - 13% alcohol. Very good long cork with minimal wine penetration. Lightish colour with significant fading at the edge of the rim.
The nose is vivid with loganberry, forrest floor and a high-pitched note (which may well have a VA component). Classy and multilayered in the mouth, with sour cherries added and the oak taking a back seat. Very long with excellent acidity in the finish. Nothing opulent here, but plenty of substance.
    A success.

September 6, 2021 - Had the Laurent NSG LSG last week which was a bit of divisive wine as it was a very muscular and structured wine. This whereas as elegant and perfumed Burgundy can get. If blinded I would have gone to Chambolle. There was a lot of wood on the nose initially but about a 30 min decant did the trick and the wood blew away for a more floral nose with a slight VA lift. Beautiful purity of fruit with all the flavors that make Burgundy special. This is a seriously good wine and up with the very best burgundies, I have had this year.

October 18, 2020 - 13% alcohol.Good long dense cork with no more than 2mm of wine penetration. Poured two glasses 15 mn ahead. The colour is evolved with significant fading at the edge of the rim.
The nose is opulent and tertiary with decayed leaves and a significant oak signature. The mouth is equally seductive, the luxurious oak being balanced by excellent acidity. There is a decadent feel about this wine, and to my mind the oak is excessive, but the result is irresistible nevertheless. Perfect match for duck stew with root vegetables.

October 21, 2019 - 13% alcohol. The cork is good, long, dense and showing minimal wine penetration.
The colour has a fair bit of browning and turbidity. The nose is very rich, with tertiary and élevage aromas dominating the fruity ones (currants); probably a touch too much oak for my taste, but very enticing nevertheless. The mouth is better again, because the oak is less obvious (although it is still there); long finish carried by excellent acidity.
Classy and enjoyable, and very good match for our partridges (the first of the season, looking forward to the pheasant in the next few weeks).

These wines were very affordable when I bought them en primeur, but they are beyond my reach now (I see the 2005 at 100€, which is insane), so the repeat purchase status does not arise. No problem, just move on to areas less infested with greedy producers.

PS: Comparison with my previous note shows that I liked it a good deal more this time; either the mood was different, or the oak has become a bit more integrated (probably the former).

PPS: Finishing the bottle the next day, the oak is much more prominent, especially coming after an un-oaked wine; in this context, I revert to my previous opinion that this wine is over-oaked.
