December 29, 2020 - Impressive. There was a time when Awatea was best enjoyed at 6 or so years, at 12 this is just developing.

    Bright colour, lovely legs.

Gradually, with a bit of breathing, lovely fragrance emerges. Rather classic claret. Still youthful but getting there.

Better than most cru bourgeois Bordeaux. Has that freshness and class of good left bank claret.

November 11, 2020 - I would have guessed this was Bordeaux and maybe an even more recent vintage (2010 vintage even?) at Grand Cru level. Not particularly special but intense and good quality, maybe a little square though.
Quite poised even austere yet rich. Could maybe do with a decant. This was stored in perfect conditions at the Wine Society with perfect cork, so ageing slowly and very well.
Food helped a lot and was a bit more open on the second day.

November 8, 2019 - Fresh, well crafted claret. Green notes are a bit dominant.

Drinks well now but I’m not worried about leaving this Awatea for 5-10 years.

June 16, 2017 - Last bottle must have been off, tasted like a different wine, still lots of tannins but well balanced on day 2 . Bordeaux ringer
