August 23, 2023 - Good bottle (think from Simon Beatty’s cellar). Needs 20mins to settle, when great nose of liquorice, Chinese plums and cinnamon. In the mouth though it’s a bit woody and hollow - nowhere near the fruit density or complexity of 89 Pegau or Beaucastel, and lots of astringency as it also finishes hot (needs serving cool, but also airing). It’s not aged well and needs drinking up. Nice minty finish though. Not a fan of more modern Janasse… or older vintages it seems. Luckily paired with rich Spanish food which absorbed some of the short-comings. 91pts… 92pts with food, drink up

February 22, 2023 - Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner - Chablis Le Clos (Noizé): Again, a savoury treat, and the type of wine that I don't drink anymore, and they don't make anymore. Certainly on the downslope and falls away a little quickly, but a treat to drink and share.

February 21, 2023 - Dark black fruit. Rich palate with a bit of treacle.

February 21, 2023 - Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner - Les Clos table (Noize): Simon's bottle. Certainly towards the end of its plateau of maturity, but I just love that leathery, plummy old Southern Rhone thang. Palates were certainly getting fatigued, so the fact we finished the bottle tells its own story.

February 21, 2023 - Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner, Clos St Jacques table (Noizé, London): Dense, quite meaty and with dried fruits on the nose, more acidity on the palate which gave it more freshness than i was expecting, not a style I’ve drunk too much before so a treat to try a well stored bottle tonight

(Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes) Medium red color with pale meniscus; a little maderized, baked plum nose; baked plum, tart cherrry, raspberry jam and spicy berry palate with good acidity, but over mature for the year; medium-plus finish 91+ pts.
