Community Tasting Notes 6

November 26, 2010 - Like "grayfront" noted, there is a strong herbal note on the nose, which my wife and I equated to a juniper/cedar-like aroma, which is very uncharacteristic of tempranillo. This carries through to the palate right after opening. It faded somewhat after decanting a couple of hours. The piney aroma really pulled down the score. There is very little red fruit on this. We didn't even finish the bottle. A very disappointing effort by Epifanio Rivera.

August 28, 2010 - identical to prior bottle, down to the overgrown weeds. no longer think prior bottle was flawed. One of the joys of wine is that everyone has a different palate. This wine is just not for me.

June 4, 2010 - I'm hoping this bottle was flawed, though I'm not 100% sure. At opening, it had what I thought was bottle funk - a nose that reminded us of weeds in an overgrown garden. That wasn't present when I tasted this at my neighborhood wine shop. We did also detect grapefruit notes on the nose in between the weeds, and the palate was quite full and rich, as I had recalled from the tasting. But the "bottle funk" never blew off, resulting in an off-putting scent through the entire bottle. (yes, we drank the whole thing, expecting it to evolve and improve over the night. what does that say for us?) So I'm marking this one flawed, since this bottle would have merited a score in the low 70s on its own but has high-80s potential based on the palate if that scent is not present in other bottles.

May 24, 2010 - Rich, full-flavored, earthy, leather/horse on the nose. Paired well with spicy beef tacos, but also very good with chocolate.
