June 4, 2020 - De-stemmed, chocolate aromatics. Serious intensity palate.

February 21, 2020 - A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Richebourg, Chablis, CDC and etc. (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Initially showing the 03 ripeness. Expressive nose displaying very ripe slightly dry black fruit, blackberry jam, strawberry jam, licorice, caramel, spicy spices, a hint of sous bois, tree bark and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, rich and opulent yet also unbelievably silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long opulent black fruit driven finish with licorice and sous bois at the end. The 03 ripe expression subsides with air. What is remarkable is the palate, which is incredibly elegant. Excellent showing.

November 16, 2019 - Dense and backward, with a touch of heat. Shocking development since last time I tasted it, or I should say regression: this comes across as needing 5 decades to unfurl. It is an extraordinary night of reds when Rousseau Chambertin is at the bottom of the pack, even if by a tiny margin.

September 7, 2019 - The 2003 Rousseau Chambertin is notably richer and more concentrated than most 2003 I have tasted, not excessive but certainly on the verge of being overripe. A muscular array of dark earthy fruits, concentrated plums, slightly jammy with hints of expresso. Full bodied, rich and big boned, seriously dense with Rousseau graceful characteristics mildly radiating in the background. Slightly clumsy in the context of a Rousseau Chambertin. Nonetheless a lovely bottle. (92-93/100)

September 4, 2019 - Generously got offered a small glass by a fellow group of oenophiles dining at the same restaurant. After the 2008 Rousseau Chambertin we shared just before this was quite a contrast and the different characteristics of the vintage became apparent. The 2003 Rousseau Chambertin is a beauitful wine for the vintage - however in comparison to 08 (rated 97) it can't compete. But that is not surprising. The 03 is clearly from a hot vintage when you compare it with 08. If I had drank this 03 in isolation however that would not have been that apparent, i.e. it is not a "stewed" wine in any way. It just is a bit clumsy, sluggish, borderline Bordeaux (moccha, earth) compared to the younger sibling which was decidedly light footed and bright like a jewel. Of course I unfairly describe more what the wine didn't have but given I had the direct comparison and the market price I feel I must take this route. I would happily drink the 03 in every and any occasion I was offered this and a privilege to taste for which I am very thankful. But this is a case where I would not be prepared to pay the market price. It was probably on a par with Meo CdV 02 tasted that night (also rated 94).
