July 20, 2019 - Once again courtesy of my good friend Mark, I get another glimpse of this beautiful lady I loved in its youth. Still very, very good, dense, black fruited. This time I got distinct impressions of anise.

Particularly enjoyable in juxtaposition to a 2013 Pina from Yountville. The Pina was brighter, a bit fruitier and very solid 93+ for me. The Beau Vigne was mature, almost elegant and resolved in comparison while still exhibiting ample power. A point higher than last bottle 95.

July 19, 2019 - This bottle a little better than the last by a half point so could technically round up to a 96, originally had it at 95.5. It had less blueberry compote and more blue/black liquoer.........dense fruit, good weight still compact and organized into a good wine. Tannins integrated nicely, acidity integrated nicely. This was a bit of a classy surprise. My last bottle.

April 23, 2019 - Nose of sweet red/black fruit, turns blue on first sip....soft feathery feminine feel in the mouth with a little late camphor on the end? Tasted a bit sweeter the other night when I used the Coravin on it to siphon off a few small glasses. Secondary taste profile for sure, a little black tar/licorice maybe. Tannins are well-integrated but there is still just a fine bead of acidity all the way through giving it a few more years in the bottle should you so choose. I should remark that the other night, my glass just reeked of blueberries. No such sense tonight, however. Still very, very good. This isn't Charlize Theron but it might be Drew Barrymore.......

April 22, 2019 - Back in 2010-12, this was the wine that cemented my love of Napa cabernet. In its youth it had a fantastic blue fruit and plum profile that was coupled with just perfect acid, a great mid palate and a very fine finish. It had power and some finesse, It was to me, the iron fist in a velvet glove. To this day, my favorite wine..it was unique and wonderful.

Now after I thought I had bought (and drank) every bottle available, my good buddy found a few bottles and I get to see what it has become after 11 years.

Full disclosure: I am not generally an aged wine fan! I like wine young and with powerful fruit as long as its well made and balanced.

So, will a wine, so wonderful in its youth, become a beautiful adult or a tired shadow of itself. Is this wine Hillary Duff, or Danny Bonaduce? (no offense intended Danny)

Upon opening, the 2008 Beau Vigne Reserve was still dark purple with only slight signs of age around the rim. It shows excellent perfume that some might say evokes blueberries. There is now also an earthiness that wines sometimes get with age. There is also perhaps a hint of herb, aged wood and vanilla.

The huge blue and plum fruit flavors have morphed into a more complex basket of tastes. Yes there is still some of the blue fruit but now wine has more wood and with less noticeable acid/edge has a distinctively liqueur delivery.

The wine feels smooth in the mouth with some tannin hanging in there but now lacks the weight, blockbuster power, and the grip it had in its youth. Finish is still fine but not remarkable.

Had I been rating wines on CT in 20011 I would have scored this wine a 99-100. I now think its still wonderful but more mature and just a bit less exciting. Not quite Hillary Duff or Elisabeth Taylor for the older of us, but maybe Drew Barrymore? 94 pts
