October 8, 2019 - This was one of the winner wines in a 2009 retrospective a few months back and it solidly delivered on this promise. Following this wine over a few glasses and a few hours it (understandably) reached an even higher score. The highlight is the combination of the two personalities of the wine: fresh & laser sharp but seductive and sensual at the same time. Certainly one of the stars of 2009 and drinking very very well today. Hard to resist.

TN: Decadent red fruit but even more darker forest berries, perfectly ripe and fresh fruit expression (more so than with the last bottle), some floral notes but a strong seductive component with coffee, cocoa, tobacco, some herbs (lavender). Very layered, seductive and intense. Perfect delineation. So pure, fresh and laser sharp and sensual and sexy at the same time. Quite a perfect structure with very round tannins and a good freshness. Very good length.

Decanting: Not decanted. It showed well right from the start but improved with some air. 2 hours of decanting should do the job.

September 20, 2019 - Off the hook! This is so sexy, sensual and hedonistic, it is probably illegal in some countries. The fruit is dripping with velvet, the wine coats your mouth, filling your palate with layer after layer with opulently textured, perfectly ripe fruit. Hints of flowers, truffle and chocolate are all over the place. Even in its youth, it is impossible not to be wowed by this stunning wine. It is going to age for decades. But if you have a case and want to take an early look, pop a cork and enjoy the ride.

July 20, 2019 - Slow ox one hour, followed by a quick decant. Spicy, tart and exceptionally balanced, yet somewhat shut down. Loads of dark fruit, yet not quite the complexity I had anticipated. Decided to let the wine decant another 90 minutes and I was rewarded with a glimpse of the highly regarded VCC prowess. At the two hour mark I started to get a hint of all sorts of secondary flavors, from mellow cherry, to bits of spice and a touch of sweet apricot, perfectly timed to balance out the dark fruits. My sense is that at the 10 year mark the VCC is showing just a glimmer of its potential. Almost perfectly balanced with fine tannins and exquisite acidity, my guess is that I opened this bottle at least 5 years too early. 96 for now, with the potential of 2-3 points higher as Father Time works his patience and magic.

June 23, 2019 - 2009 Bordeaux 10 years in the bottle 2-day horizontal; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019 (Fribourg): Part of a grand Bordeaux 2009 tasting spanning 2 days that revealed 1) a right bank struggling with overripe fruit and overwhelming tannins, 2) wide spreak between top performers and laggards, 3) left bank, and especially Margaux, outshone the right bank cousins, 4) Top wines: Palmer, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Vieux Chateau Certan.

    Tasting note:
Along with a ripe, but less extracted fruit and a nice smokey overlay. Savoury, sweet spices, herbs. Fruity, more fresh palate with a broad flavours profile. Along with Cheval Blanc my favourite on the right bank.

(Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol) This vintage the grand vin accounts for 70% of the harvest, with an assemblage of 84% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yield 40 hl/ha. Alcohol 13.7%. Not a deeply coloured wine, cherry red with a pink rim. The nose has a beautiful creamed-fruit character, bright and with wonderful clarity. Served quite cool in Thienpont's cellars. Lovely elegant spice though. The palate begins very subtly, slowly building and opening out especially as the wine warms, but it maintains a fine elegance throughout. There is cream here, but also precision and definition. Ripe tannins, unobtrusive, harmonious, very much in keeping with the wine, and a fine core of acidity too. Such a lovely composition, with fine cottony tannins. This has a style very typical of Vieux Chateau Certan, the combination of succulence but also elegance. And with time will come complexity. Delicious.
