February 25, 2020 - I was a bit disappointed with this bottle as I had this beauty twice much better in my glass in the past 12 months (rated 96 and 98 points). Not as expressive, not as precise, not as sexy but still boasting this incredibly weightless structure and hinting to all the potential this wine has. Probably we should have decanted this bottle (even-though the two last bottles haven‘t been decanted either).

TN: The aromatic profile is on par with many other 2009 right banks with this sexy and slutty coffee, nutty components along lots of ripe but still fresh red and darker red berries with earthy aromas. As mentioned above not as perfectly delineated and intense as other bottles of this but still very good. Highlight is the ultra-fine structure.

Decanting: I don‘t think this needs a lot of air but would still allow for two hours to be on the safe side.

February 20, 2020 - Tasted blind. Sweet tobacco and other aging aromas, ripe and intense fruit showing red and blue berries. First impression already incredibly sexy instantly reminding me of a Beckstoffer vineyard in Napa (hence 0 points for me here in the tasting). Great intensity, tension and balance – but with a surprisingly abrupt finish. This was paired against VCC 2015 and in this comparison the 2009 came across somewhat heavy-handed.

January 31, 2020 - Another gorgeous VCC. Big and full per the vintage but also structured and precise underneath. Loads of black fruits and truffle notes flow over the tongue with such a silky, layered texture. This is a "wow" VCC that is starting to drink already but clearly its best days are still ahead. 96+

January 29, 2020 - Vieux Chateau Certan with François and Alexandre Thienpont (Vaucluse Townhouse, New York, organized by Zachys): Much rounder and riper than the 2010. Silky fine tannins give this beautiful structure. Plums, blueberries and some smoke.

October 29, 2019 - Bordeaux 2009 Grand Cru / 10-years on / tasted blind: My gosh, is this an exuberant nose. Lots of toast still, plum, cassis, spices, really wild. Rich palate with good structure and freshness. A bit of a roller coaster but of the joyride type. No signs of cooked fruit and over-ripeness, hence my high score for this showman. WOTN #3

(Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol) This vintage the grand vin accounts for 70% of the harvest, with an assemblage of 84% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yield 40 hl/ha. Alcohol 13.7%. Not a deeply coloured wine, cherry red with a pink rim. The nose has a beautiful creamed-fruit character, bright and with wonderful clarity. Served quite cool in Thienpont's cellars. Lovely elegant spice though. The palate begins very subtly, slowly building and opening out especially as the wine warms, but it maintains a fine elegance throughout. There is cream here, but also precision and definition. Ripe tannins, unobtrusive, harmonious, very much in keeping with the wine, and a fine core of acidity too. Such a lovely composition, with fine cottony tannins. This has a style very typical of Vieux Chateau Certan, the combination of succulence but also elegance. And with time will come complexity. Delicious.
