November 11, 2023 - Vintage Wine - Bordeaux Tasting 11/11/23: 13.5% ABV. Deep ruby core, garnet rim. Decanted for 2.5 hours.
Blackberry, cassis, black plum, violet, cigar box, nutmeg, clove, hint of barnyard. Beautiful acidity gives an ethereal and silky mouthfeel. Plush, round tannins. Finish seems endless.
This is a profound wine and Ducru has put on an absolute masterclass in balancing elegance, complexity, richness, and depth of flavor. That “iron fist, velvet glove” thing that people like to assign to wine - insert that here because this is the poster child of that. This is starting to hit its stride now, but has more evolution and decades of runway to go. 99-100 point potential.3 people found this helpful Comment -

November 4, 2023 - 100-rated 2009 Bordeaux dinner: Tonight's event featured eight 100-point-professinally-rated (by Parker and/or Dunnuck) 2009 Bordeaux reds plus Yquem. The reds: Montrose, Pontet-Canet, Leoville Poyferre, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Smith Haut Lafitte, Clinet, Clos Fortet, and Troplong Mondot. All were purchased upon release, properly cellared, and decanted 3 hours before consumption over another 2-3 hours. In general, IMO and by consensus, none of the reds drank close to perfection. Did they on release? No idea. Will they in time? No idea. I rated them in a relatively tight band of 93-97 tonight. If I owned them, I'd wait on all and gamble on tertiary development. None had material tertiary flavors now. I would hold and gamble on their getting better with it than without. WOTN was unquestionably the d'Yquem. Unlike the reds, it was immortal and perfect.
My #2 WOTN and the winner from the other table. A gambler who values wisdom of the crowd would bet on this one. I've loved old Ducru and wouldn't be surprised to see this evolve into a 98 in time.3 people found this helpful Comment -

October 31, 2023 - Good but by no means great. Drank over course of 2 days. It did open after about an hour but is just lacking acidity and balance for my taste. A little flat considering my expectations.

September 5, 2023 - Concentrated, opulent, deep, ripe, sensuous, and mouthcoating, this is a majestic vintage with incredibly, creamy, silky tannins, length, purity, and denseness, with a mouth-filling finish that is close to seamless from start to finish. The wine blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Merlot. Drink from 2025-2055.
