May 21, 2022 - Now evolving towards full maturity. Subtle nose of noble wood, liquorice and tobacco. Medium bodied, elegant and complex, a bit hesitating. Black berries, liquorice, roast aromas, sweet spices and earthy notes. Although 1998s generally will never match the block buster years it has reached a pleasant state.

May 5, 2022 - Decanted… deep red color still mostly clear, dark red and purple fruit notes lurking, along with hints of savory herbs. Not much fruit, really, just smooth and gripping your taste buds with staying power. I’m glad we held onto this for 20+ years—I don’t think it gets better than this!

April 28, 2022 - Bordeaux Wimps (La Trompette, Chiswick): Aromatic nose, cigar box, dark fruit, smoke. Medium/full bodied, ripe blackcurrant fruit, cigar box, soft tannins, some richness but has line with fresh acidity carrying a very good length, harmonious finish. Excellent, drinking well, absolutely no hurry.

April 9, 2022 - Still in perfect shape, unluckily my last bottle.

April 4, 2022 - This is drinking great right right now. Pencil shavings graphite tobacco earth. Lots of good things happening here. The finish has a slightly green taste but easily overcome by all the good pieces. Very enjoyable. Popped and started picking up volume and opening up after 2 hours. Left over night and tasted equally good on day 2.

Rockss and Fruit

(Pape-Clement) This wine was so overextracted and bitter that quite simply put, Michel Rolland raped the extract out of these grapes to the point of no return. These grapes were forced to give it up, and all of it up, as every single bit of extract was sucked out these grapes and it is dead or to keep the metaphor going, severely emotionally damaged. A shame as this wine showed very well five years ago. It was not an enjoyable beverage at all and I see the wine going nowhere. It was dark black and bitter with mild aromatic notes like tobacco that one would commonly associate with Pessac. A shame. Why does Michel Rolland have to mess with this estate? The were making perfectly fine wine in vintages like 1961. A shame as the material was probably good as 1998 was excellent in Graves/Pessac-Leognan.
