April 21, 2024 - Consumed in a 375 mL bottle. Deep purple color. Rich aromas but this was a bit rough to drink. We did not decant it and this could be part of the problem. While it had the typical minerality on the palate that I love with Fonseca, this was less well balanced than the elegant 1994 which I had very recently. Perhaps this needs more time, greater decantation, or is simply different because of extreme weather conditions in 2003.

February 17, 2024 - Loud and bold! In a similar style to the 2009; perhaps even riper. Already featuring secondary and tertiary elements. Highly enjoyable for what it is...and that is a Vintage Port in its mid to late drinking window. Recommend enjoying over the next few years. Alcohol will preserve it through 2030 or so.

December 25, 2023 - Chocolate, subtly sweet. Very nice.

November 24, 2023 - From 375mL. Clearly flawed. Hints of the core of the wine were in there, but framed by bland wet cardboard flavors. The cork want quite wet cat food consistency but it got shredded even after an attempt at salvage with an ah so. I have a durand but as this was opened at my brother's house I did not have it with me. I believe the cork would have disintegrated even with it in this case.

Glad I have two more 375's!

June 17, 2023 - Visit to Fonseca tasting room, Vila Nova de Gaia (Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal): Colour: intense purple
Nose: Medium(+) intensity, secondary, developing. Blackcurrant, blackberry, mulberry. Blackcurrant jam. Oak, sweet spice. Pungent (alcohol). Touch of eucalypt forest floor. Still seems somewhat closed?
Palate: high tannins, medium(+) acidity, high alcoho, (20,5%). Pronounced intensity, long finish. Blackcurrant, blackberry, mulberry. Blackcurrant jam. Oak, sweet spice. Pungent (alcohol). Touch of eucalypt forest floor. Not dissimilar to the 2013 Guimaraens VP tried the same day -- just with MORE of everything. Seems a little closed at the moment. I would love to re-taste this in ten years time. I suspect this will eventually become the kind of wine that you would promise to be a better person for the rest of your life in exchange for just one more glass....
Conclusions: outstanding. (Just) suitable for drinking now, but will improve with 10+ years age.
