September 5, 2020 - Lovely vibrant nose. Deep colour for a 12 year old Barbera. Lovely juicy palate. Drinking perfectly. More ish. Last bottle. Would last longer but we enjoyed drinking these up.
April 12, 2020 - Coming into peak shape. Needs time in the decanter - an hour at least. Fabulous length, now beautifully joined up. It’s not a great year - and it doesn’t rival 2010 which I’m drinking now - but this is still Conterno magic. Try soon. And if you have a few, try every 6 months until your supply runs out.
September 20, 2018 - I don't think that you could get much closer to a California Pinot Noir done in today's predominant style than this Barbera. It's unctuous, dark, and rich, with Barbera's signature acidity suppressed beneath the waves of fruit. So, is it really Barbera then? Don't know, but it works.
Based on this bottle, this vintage can drink well for some years to come.
July 6, 2018 - First tried this in Piedmont with Roberto. Seems to have been a long wait to try it again. This wine is still standing proud and has some years ahead of it, but it’s not as good as later vintages. If you have it, drink it because it’s worth trying now, but don’t rush as it will last another 3-5 years comfortably.
October 9, 2015 - Very dense nose with dark berries, mainly blueberries but also some ripe cherries. Rather creamy impression and some sweet notes to the berries. Some oil paint and under vegetation can also be found.
The palate is dominated by dark berries with a sweet tone and some inc and alcohol. The acidity is there but gets overpowered by the dense fruit notes.
This is an expressive and dense Barbera from a fantastic producer but mediocre vintage.
September 22, 2015 - Deep color. The nose shows liqueur like black cherry, deep damp earth and a hint of licorice. This is medium bodied on the palate, with very good concentration and a fair bit of class. The medium plus length finish features earthy tannins and bright acidity. Starting to lose some fresh fruit.
January 27, 2015 - I detected some volatile acidity in this bottle. It had almost a balsamic and prickly presentation on the front and mid-palate which blocked any rich fruit which I believe was under it - and the 15% alcohol. This was my 3rd and last bottle and none were anything like the Cascina Francia I usually consume, but this was the only one which seemed off and never came around. The score is for the other bottles which were merely decent Barbera - for any other producer than Conterno.
October 27, 2014 - Dark and inky. Initial aromas are muted and a bit hazy. With air this wine shows power and finesse. My problem with this wine is the alcohol level. The acidity is very pleasant and needed to keep the wine from heaviness. My first real experience with Cerretta. Big fan of Conterno in general and I think future vintages will show more elegance
September 7, 2013 - Nice enough but feel the fruit on this has lost its freshness & gone a bit stewed with age. Not nearly as enjoyable as the last bottle i had 18months ago.
May 3, 2013 - Complex, spicy, inky dark, touch of a "yeasty" note, crushed chewable vitamins, black cherry.
