December 13, 2019 - Wild berries, smoky, tobacco, and scorched earth. Silky and long. I find a distinctive style and character to the SHL wines. Lovely wine, but starting to lose it's fruit so drink up!

December 11, 2019 - Monthly Tasting Group HWS #144; Bordeaux - Pessac-Léognan (By me): Just limited notes. Red and dark berries, good acidity and round, mild tannin. Certainly a beautiful wine.

November 2, 2019 - PnP at a restaurant and needed about 20 mins in the glass to fully unwind. This had a classic Bordeaux profile, with dark concentrated fruit, cigar box, graphite, and a light dose of Old World funk. Beautifully balanced and complex. Was concerned about greeness given the vintage, but did not pick up any bitterness or astringency. Has to be at or near peak in my mind. I love SHL in lesser vintages as they always seem to shine.

October 29, 2019 - Just a beautiful bordeaux. Full bodied, great fruit, oak, smoke, secondary and some tertiary notes, balance, still present but mollified tannins, long finish. Its got it all in a sophisticated wine.

August 9, 2019 - Decanted for an hour. Typical mature Bx on the nose with notes of black current fruit and cigar box. In the mouth, great character, slightly thin on the mid palate, lacking a bit of fruit, but a refreshing and complex finish. A bit "green" at the moment. Will hopefully evolve during the next 5-10 years. I should not complain given the vintage.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte (Pessac-Léognan)) This blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. I've tasted this wine plenty of times before. Some really appealing young Graves nuances here, this is going to be beautiful with a few more years. Aromas of dark pencil shavings, autumn leaves, cough-stick candy and Pessac earth all rolled up into a whole. A restrained character on the palate despite this expressive nose, with a well-judged, linear substance and a well-defined core of fruit which has an appealing leafy and smoky edge. Fresh acidity too. By far the most enticing wine in this tasting.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) This has plenty of dense fruit on the nose, presented in a stylish and evocative style, tinged with tobacco. It is fleshy, with dark fruits, a creamy texture, but still very bright and stylish. This has weight and impact but it is not overdone. There is a core of ripe tannins and an appealing backbone of acidity. Really a very good wine.

(Château Smith Haut Lafitte) Dark raspberry red color; big coffee and espresso nose; tasty, tart cassis and espresso palate with plush mouthfeel; medium finish (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc)

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Exotic, smoky, spicy, very alluring wine. Rather open, not fabulously concentrated, but there is a good presence created by a nice grip and freshness of fruit. Rather gentle. Certainly appealing, which again should make for very good drinking in the future.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) This modern-styled wine shows some sweet and buttery oak on the nose, wrapped in some confit black fruits. Rounded and a little creamily textured, the wine hides its supple tannins well until the finish. Nice, cool style, with pepper-spice notes. Attractive.
