Community Tasting Notes 5

February 12, 2022 - Fully mature grand old Barolo. Gave about 4 hours of air in the decanter, and the wine vastly improved and gained body and strength. Easily top wine of the night.
Would happily repurchase at what I paid if I knew it would perform like it did. The decant timewas key.

NOSE: very old-smelling --- oxidized; leafy; minty; with air, did gain a pleasant baked cherry aroma.

BODY: light bodied; light bricking throughout: red color at its core, but mostly brick colored at the edges; color is of light depth at this point.

TASTE: tertiary; high acidity; madeira; baked cherry; light flavor; improved with air; light flavor; incredibly moreish; surprisingly solid showing from this 50+ yo bottle. Gut impression score: low 90's, but I would't quibble with anyone who slaps a few more points on there simply for ageing this well. Given the price I paid, the wine's age, and the unknown provenance (purchased through online retailer 1.5 years ago), this wine was everything I could have reasonably expected it to be. Drink Now.

January 12, 2020 - The group consensus was TCA, but I disagree. It had corked-like aromas, but it was more cooked, run down, and had a little volatile acidity. Mine was a small minority opinion, but I'm hypersensitive to TCA, and while flawed, this wasn't TCA.

November 24, 2019 - Bottle/cork were in great shape, but wine was past peak. Yet still enough fruit remaining to be drinkable. Wish I had this 10+ years earlier.

July 30, 2018 - Cork about 1/3 soaked, retrieved with Durand, slow ox for 2-3 hours, some slight VA on the nose, all the old mature Barolo markers are checked, vibrant and alive
