November 18, 2021 - Good deep garnet color; medium-bodied with flavors of plum, raspberry, good acid and some mild, rustic tannins. Pretty nice! 13% abc

November 26, 2020 - Pretty translucent red color with no bricking. Still very alive. A bit reserved, but it has a sexy cherry - vanilla cough drop scent with a bit of spice and stem scents that becomes more floral with air. Solid and linear on the palate with just ripe tannins and a medium length finish. Not complex on the palate, but drinking well. Really nicely done given the year and conditions. With air time overnight color darkens and the pretty scent subsides a bit, but the palate smoothies out and reveals the acid backbone supporting the wine. This should be fine for several more years but I don’t see it improving or gaining further complexity.

November 28, 2019 - Thematic Thanksgiving (Los Gatos, California): Pale red. Nice aromatic mixture of red berry and soil. Light, limpid, soft red fruit and earth. Fully mature. Better fruit and less weedy than so many 2008 Beaujolais.

    February 28, 2018 - Past its prime

February 11, 2017 - Dark fruit and some spice, beginnings of forest floor. Nice grip and acid on the palate although it seems to all be about the mid-palate. The finish is a little lost. Nice though. Could have aged longer

(RESERVE VV Burgaud Cote de Py) Vieilles Vignes Dear Friends, While it seems almost silly to say this, as far as classic Beaujolais is concerned, this is about the finest price/quality ratio you will come across. In the last week or so, Jean-Marc Burgaud has become an international star. His Beaujolais portfolio was one of the highest rated in the history of the Wine Advocate (or any other US publication for that matter) and that was from David Schildknecht – a stingy scorer with a worldly penchant for terroir. In other words, the scores actually meant something. While the acclaim for his 2009 arsenal was easy to predict, if you tasted everything side-by-side while still in tank, one parcel stood out and it was not from 2009 – it was Burgaud’s pet project and his personal love - the miniscule bottling of late bottled “Reserve Vieilles Vignes” from the Cote de Py (in this case, it is 2008). A wine that tastes like pure rock mixed with purple dye, if you consider yourself part of the WGN (wine geek nation) or the new-coolio movement of know-it-all natural wine fanatics (NCMKIANWF), I strongly urge you to partake of this iron-fisted, chiseled concoction. It has the magical combination of low alcohol, stone and lithe fruit that the finest examples of Beaujolais possess while still covering the palate with jagged and cool-toned extractive. If you have no idea what the paragraph above meant but you just like good wine, this is also for you as it forces exploration outside of your normal comfort zone and toward a horizon that (once broadened) is difficult to retreat from. A wine of intellectual and gustatory complexity that leans on its grape skin grit and mineral tone for framework, not its sappy ripe fruit: VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for classic old-vine Beaujolais with a chip on its shoulder. As far as I know, this is the only shipment of this wine headed to the US: 2008 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Cote de Py “Reserve” Vieilles Vignes - (if you consider what the regular 2008 Cote de Py sells for, this is a crazy price – compare at $24-28+ for the Reserve VV) FIRST COME FIRST SERVED at this price up to 24/person until we run out To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to depart from Burgaud’s cellar – it will arrive in late October/early November (please check OARS for local pick up after November 1st). It will ship during the Fall shipping season (late, if the weather cooperates). Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. Locals may pick up at their leisure.
