September 7, 2020 - still perfect great balance
August 23, 2020 - Both wines from 375 purchased at the domaine in 2008.
2000. Very dark maroon. Nose of very dark fruit - blackberry and duck innards and mint. Dark fruits are concentrated and well balanced against the fine tannin and appropriate acid. Long, dark cherry finish with some vanilla spice. Not yet at its mature best.
2001. Very Dark pure red until the thin brick edge. Dark fruit nose, some vanilla nose and a little oxidation. Sweet very ripe fruit with fine tannin and very appropriate acid. Long and fruitier than the 2000 and this bottle, at least is more mature than the 2000. Both these wines show the Montelena balance, ageability and the new world fruit.
From Producer’s Website:
2000 – Cool
Average rainfall. Growing season dominated by cool weather and spikes of intense heat. Cluster loss from windy heat in June kept yield low. The light crop allowed full ripening and harvesting before the onset of wet weather. The wine is very refined, high quality.
2001 – Temperate
Well below average rainfall. Frost damage followed by high heat in May that caused some shatter kept yields low. Remainder of season was mild and grapes attained full maturity before picking. Started night picking to increase fruit integrity. Wines are very rich, well-balanced, and full.
May 30, 2020 - Requires decanting as on open the wine was a bit funky and closed but a good hour in a decanter let it cheer up and become more expressive. Still though nowhere close to the earlier bottle we had like 6m ago ( Papies 93) and thus we feel this is not a characteristic one and we will not rate this time.
April 7, 2020 - WIML94
Tasted non blind.
Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of violets, plums, cassis, white pepper and a hint of rose petals. Flavors of plums, Kirsch and boysenberries. Medium to tangy acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold.
March 25, 2020 - From Magnum. A quarantining choice, could have waited another 20 years. Tis life.
March 4, 2020 - Drank this with a grilled beef tenderloin. Delicious mature Cab, Muted fruit, earth, lead pencil. Drink or hold.
March 3, 2020 - Upon opening the cork was good and the initial color and aroma were good. This was given a double decanting and allowed to sit for a while. It opened up very nicely and was a pleasure to drink. It clearly has some age on it and is enjoyable to drink now (decant for sure) but will probably hold a few more years.
October 11, 2019 - Double decanted for a good hour or so. Very little in terms of sediment. Helped in opening the wine.
Very much the old school cali cab this sets out to be and its now entering its proper drinking window. Bright and still on the fruit, little secondary, red fruits on the forefront, light kiss of oak at this stage. Very solid wine and with lots of life ahead. 92-93
October 1, 2019 - Dark purple. Fresh black fruits. Vanilla. Eucalyptus. Medium sweetness. Medium acidity. Medium tannin. Low to medium noticeable alcohol. Medium to full bodied. This is still quite simple at this stage but I suspect it would improve and develop more complexity with time. Not as sweet as some napa wines which I liked. Balanced. Served blind to SG4.
September 1, 2019 - Clear medium ruby. Clean nose, medium intensity. Aromas of prunes, cedar, wet leaves, cooked plums. Full developed. Dry, medium acidity, medium, silky tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, medium plus flavor intensity of fruit preserves, meat, mushrooms, cured meat. Medium plus finish. Very good wine. Drink up now. Should not be aged much further.
