February 5, 2024 - An absolute stunner, and super rare "monopole" or single plot Agincourt too. Leisurely Monday dinner at our Clubhouse Butchers Table, with WMK, LMC, SKT, RN and M, as well as L.

Thanks brother WMK for surprising us, my 3 Bordeaux sifus all called Saint-Julien as we had this blind alongside some other classic Bordeauxs (VCC 96 and Figeac 01)!

Turns out... its this Yarra Yering Agincourt Dry Red No.1 2005!

The Agincourt block of Cab Sauv was planted in 1995 and Malbec 1990. It is the most easterly part of the vineyard planted in one of the most sheltered sites.

There was so little info on what Agincourt meant, or what the blend was for this cuvee. I only understood that this is basket pressed and fermented in French Bordeaux barrels.

It is thanks to brother SKT who actually wrote to the good people of Yarra Yering back in 2019, that we uncovered the following!

This "Agincourt" means it's a 75% Cab Sauv, with 25% Merlot. As the name and label implies, this Cab comes specially from the Agincourt block.

Whilst a Dry Red Wine No.1 WITHOUT the print Agincourt is a blend of Cab from the No.1 block, with Merlot, PV and Malbec too.

This confusion was resolved from 2007 when YY decided to rename this Dry Red Wine No.1 Agincourt to.. Agincourt Cabernet Merlot ❤️ Thanks to brother SKT I finally understood this mystery. Pretty cool right!

Dry Red Wine No.1 especially with a vintage over ten years is hard to find.. And I have so far not found ANY available on Wine-searcher or across all the online stores. Wow... How crazy rare, and so grateful to try it.

March 11, 2020 - This bottle is not a normal Dry Red No. 1, it’s actually called Agincourt Dry Red No. 1, I guess it’s the Bordeaux blend Cabernet with the Malbec from the Agincourt block. Well balanced after 10+ years in cellar, plum, savoury and long finish. No problem for another 5~10 years in cellar. It can only get better!

May 8, 2013 - More than good wine from Aussie land , this is Probably the style that Aussie should pursue for all their wines. Naturally ripe , reasonably Oaked , allowing more than just ripe sugars and big alc showing through. This is classy eucalyptus, roasted green capsicums, mint leaves lifted , tobacco cigar enclosed subtle blue berries, currants and classic structure.

May 5, 2013 - Rainy Afternoon Drinks (Straits Wine, Rail Mall): I liked this quite a bit - it was my favourite out of the trio we had, just shading a very decent little Rioja. With very expressive notes of capsicums and tobacco along with sweet cassis and berries, it had a nose that married new world ripeness with some very old-worldly inflections. I could say the same thing of the palate as well. There was a rich, sunny sweetness to its fleshy notes of ripe cherries and ripe berries that made it immediately attractive, but these were also accompanied by subtle nuances of smoke and tobacco, along with a fine structure of supple tannins and balancing acidity that led the wine into a nicely minerally tail with just the littlest hint of mint. Not exactly Bordeaux, but it certainly had classic lines under its fleshy fruit. A very complete wine actually, nicely put together with good bones for aging, yet very drinkable in its relatively youth. This was very enjoyable. It will be interesting to taste this in another 5-6 years.

October 1, 2011 - Medium red in colour, the nose has blackcurrant, tomato leaf and olive with an underlying briney element that adds complexity and sparks interest.

The medium bodied palate is laden with black and blue fruits, ultra fine, earthy tannins and finishes with great elegance of dark berry fruit.
