Wow. 20 yrs old but feels much younger. Deep magenta with edges starting to turn brown hue. Nose has violets, lots of berries, a little bacon fat (?), and starting to hint at decomposed material. A little mushroom but early days. Mouthfeel is silky, very classy. Lots of berries again on the palate and just a hint of mushroom. Starting to head towards old burgundy but the acidity is much lower and the tannin wall is still very pronounced in this. What an outstanding bottle !

Tasting of two Barolos (01 and 06) and a Barbaresco (1999). 1 hour decant. Tasted independent and with Artie's drunken ribeye. Clear, pale garnet with significant meniscus, high viscosity - and just a bit of sediment. Great nose. Cherry, coffee, slate and vanilla. Palate of cherry and raspberry, with a hint of vanilla, a bit of bell pepper and leather towards the finish. Full bodied, medium acidity, fine but high tannins. Long length with medium complexity - this had the most tannins remaining, particularly on the finish. Averaging scores, this finished second overall to the Barbaresco, but was very close. Tasting with the food, this was even more wonderful, and the drunken ribeye balanced out the tannins - just delicious. This may still have a few years on it.

Notably better than the bottle I had a few days ago. This one also started off very dry but bloomed quite a bit with air and turned out very enjoyable. Perhaps it was lower expectations, or perhaps a better food pairing, but for whatever reason, this wine was a hit. Drink.

Very dry, with abundant tannins that detract slightly from the experience. Not quite balanced in terms of tannin vs fruit, but still a pretty good drink.
