Vinous Monfortino Dinner with Roberto Conterno; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Legacy Records, NYC): The '79 was one of the surprises of the tasting, outperforming the bottles from the '80s in my opinion. It had that intoxicating sweet fruit that I crave in old Nebbiolo, and still showed quite primary, in a good way. I found sweet red fruit, fresh red roses, menthol, and baking spices. The fruit quality is outstanding. On the palate, the wine is medium in body with fully integrated tannins, one of the silkiest wines of the evening. Sweet red fruit, blood, red roses, leather, and raw meats flowed across the palate, with vibrant acidity. This is so fresh while also being expressive and ready to drink, and again as with the best wines of the evening, there's a perfect combination of sweet fruit and savory notes.

Bricking on the edge. Beautiful honey on the nose with lots of earth. Tobacco at the end. Loads of acidity with some sweetness at the finish. Really just a gorgeous wine. I had it over a course of a few hours with three Bordeaux from the same vintage---it clearly towered over all three.

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. I was thrilled to see this wine, but rather disappointed when smelled and tasted. Lean, tart red cherry with moderate spice, but this didn't really come across as particularly clean. I'd wonder about its long-term storage.

Beautiful showing, and a lot of love for this bottle around the table.

Very old / tired on opening, but it really improved with slow aeration in the glass. Quite interesting/appealing eventually.
