The 2012 Le Clos du Caillou La Reserve showed an intense, red fruited bouquet, leading off with crushed raspberry, spiced cherry, and sweet, exotic spices permeating the senses, as pretty florals, dusty earth and lifting mineral tones developed in the glass. On the palate, I found silky textures, offset by masses of acid-driven, tart red fruits with sweet and sour spice, a zing of brisk acids and cascading, crystalline tannin, which seemed to grip the senses, and then force them to water for another sip. The La Reserve finished long, tart, yet also so vibrant, giving the impression of immediacy, yet also structured and saturating with its intense display of dark raspberry and spice. The Mourvèdre in this blend really makes it so special in 2012. I wish I had cases of this in reserve, what an incredible wine, and still just a baby in terms of evolution.

Rule the Rhone; 10/27/2016-11/3/2016 (Northern & Southern Rhone): The whole tasting was very good, but it was clear we took a step up with this one. 60% Grenache and 40% Mouvedre and perhaps that just lended a bit more of a backbone and finish to the whole thing. Very enjoyable. Heavier tannins here and while there's lots of fruit there's also leather and more cigar characteristics. Again get hints of almost a candied flavor. I enjoyed and we brought home two bottles.

There is a purity of fruit that leaves a long impression here. This is made even better with the freshness, length and silky tannins that push along the spice and ripe berry driven finish. This will be fun to age. The blend of 60% old vine Grenache and 40% Mourvedre reached 16% alcohol with no sensation of heat.

The mourvedre element in this blend makes for a distinct change in impact from the Quartz bottlings despite the similarity in vinification
So the nose shows lovely ripe fruit with a touch of hard spice on the back, a characteristic that continues onto the palate
Ripe and silky palate, long lasting gentle acidity, beautiful, but for the money I prefer the Quartz
