  • Really lovely colour, bright mid garnet, almost trending to orange at the rim, but vibrant and bright. Ever so slightly finely cloudy. This is producer and vintage to the fore, over vineyard. Very harmonious, smooth and rounded with good acidity. Mid weight mellow red fruit that’s nicely sweet on the finish. Very attractive indeed. ****

  • Dinner at Beng Wan (Beng Wan Terrace): What a coincidence to have two bottles of this wine side-by-side, if just separated by 18 vintages (1990 and 2008)! Good rather than brilliant, but this was nevertheless really enjoyable - certainly more so than the stern and slightly stingy 1990. The nose showed touch of burnt pine cones and wood spices, dark cherries and plums, a good bit of earth and meat. Expressive, a little in-your-face, but quite attractive. A world away from the 1990, which was very much more the classic NSG with its mineral and wet stone notes. The palate very much echoed the nose here, with a deep blush of black cherries, sweet plums, even cassis, all touched with a good bit earth and just a hint of burnt rubber. All still a bit tight and grippy, with firm tannins and chewy acidity carrying the wine into a slightly drying finish. Not bad, plenty of power, but this needs time yet - another 5-6 years at least.

  • deep orange to pale red color
    nose seemed shy to me
seemed lean and acidic in structure - firm
some fruit was there and was decent with food but only a little better than "just OK"

(perhaps too young? or never was gonna be better?)

  • Extraordinary nose of forest floor, leather, animale, some brett going on for sure but really aromatic and lovely with exotic spices and tangy small forest berries as well. Nice med. body entry, great ample concentration showing pomegranate, black cherry, cardamom and licorice spices, musky perfume, pheromones, compost; tangy juicy acidity, still youthful but entering middle age, fine sneaky tannins, and a med. + only finish. Still, not bad for '08, drinking really well now. Will hold many years as long as the brett doesn't take over, but glad I opened now. Cheer-me-up bottle alone at home during covid.
