88 Points

Monday, May 1, 2006 - It was one of those nights; I prepared a multi-course meal and opened up a bunch of stuff on the edge not knowing how any of them would do. All of them flopped and I found myself going back to the Shafer. After an hour, the wine revealed a smoky honeysuckle melon note. It really did take that time for a hard acrid note in the nose to dissipate. The mouth if full, with medium weight, and a finish of both melon fruit, some lemon citrus and a touch of harshness that indicates that the 1998 has peaked and is in decline. Overall a good Shafer but far from the best examples that I have had. The 1998 is on a decline, give it 30 minutes then drink up.
