2008 J.M. Boillot Volnay

Community Tasting Note

wrote:

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 - 1/2 consumed over 1 1/2 hours on night 1, some left for another evening. The cork was seeping on this one, but there didn't seem to be any ill effect to the wine. Youthful but closed, with a reserved nose of floral notes and black licorice. On the palate, the main impression is of tart cranberries with background notes of earth and soft wood or mushrooms. Tannins are gentle but present.

I'm not very experienced with burgundy, but I'd guess that this needs at least another year or two before it comes out of its shell.

2/2/2012 2:31:00 PM - Bret, curious if this did any better on night 2? I appreciate your note, I've got some of these, too. I was in Burgundy for the 08 harvest - a tricky bugger, but things turned around nicely at the last minute. These have structure and will likely require 5+ years. Not so sure of the underlying quality of fruit from this producer, but going to hope for the best. Volnay is typically an early drinker, but the vintage characteristics might dictate otherwise.

For various reasons, I didn't get back to this until day 4, at which point it wasn't undrinkable, but it had definitely oxidized a bit and gone downhill. Not too much else to say except that we ended up using the last glass for cooking.
