1998 Château Latour Grand Vin

Sunday, December 23, 2012 - I was expecting a lot more and ended up really quite disappointed by this wine. The '86 Ducru Beaucaillou we had in the same night was much better. In its peak right now, this wine never really came together over the 5 hrs from decant to last drop that we had it. Nose showed better at first with a muted palate, then palate got better but nose disappeared. Has some power, not terribly much; given the choice I'd drink this wine without food, even, because the only thing I really found intriguing about it were some mid-palate nuances that food might have overwhelmed. What a total waste of money.

I think 92 points is a correct score, but you are a bit tough when you say you don't like the wine ... even if you give it 92 points.
I understand you can be disappointed if you pay a lot of money ... it is Latour. I was quite lucky to get this wine for 120 USD a bottle.
If you have time ... give the wine 16 hours before serving it.
By the way, I like your notes :-)

For USD120 I would've been quite happy with it, but I think he shelled out something much closer to $300 if not considerably more. I'm quite flattered that you enjoy my notes though and very happy that you think 92 is a fair score for the wine itself, as I tried to score based purely on the juice: my overall impression and disappointment factors in everything else, from the price to the storied name of Latour itself.
