93 Points

Friday, March 1, 2013 - Beautiful deep crimson-violet color. The generous nose is like a basket of sweet berries, with roasty oak, a faint chalky earthiness, and slightly fumey alcohol. Plush and mouthcoating, with considerable heat and big, puckering acidity that carries through the finish. With air, the tannins came forward quite coarsely, along with a bit of complexity, although the volatility did not dissipate. Overall, an interesting and impressive wine, yet a little exuberant and immature for current drinking. Although the 14.5% abv is very much present and could be a problem, this has the potential to be special in 8 to 10 years. (This half-bottle probably would not have aged long, though, as the cork was already veiny and crumbly and splitting, one of the poorest quality corks I've ever seen).
