Saturday, September 28, 2013 - The "big time" whole cluster I mentioned in 2009 is pretty well resolved. There is a hint of it in the wine, but as compared to the 2005 Keltie we drank yesterday, this Kobler is well below that wine's expression for cluster. The vintage shows more here, with the more forward fruit, juicy, blue and black. Some charcoal, too. Reminds me a bit of the Lucia Susan's Hill from the same vintage. There are a # of varied perspectives in the notes below from others (within CT), some negative on this wine. I don't have that same reaction to this bottle, as I found it to be more like mid-era, riper styled CA syrah with some herbal nuance to it, drinking fine now. For what it's worth, as a closing comment, I opened this wine on Saturday and when I was done, just jammed the cork back into it with about 1/2 a bottle remaining. Today is Wednesday and I decided to try what was left in the bottle since the weekend and it's changed. There is a bloody note to the aromatic today, along with some spicey, cracked herbal notes and purple flower. The palate has the same similar blue and red tang to it from the weekend, with some opulence but in total, the wine has held together nicely, even improved in terms of a balanced expression. There's acid here too, inside that tangy core, to keep the wine chugging along so in terms of a drink window, I'd say another 3-5 years.
