Thursday, October 3, 2013 - An interesting Sangiovese from a top cool climate Aussie producer. Deep ruby with a degree of browning on the rim. Big aromas of red fruit, cranberries, pomegranate, cherries (mostly cooked or dried rather than ripe); a real savoury note of gazpacho, Worcester sauce, breakfast tea; a little hint of grass and sage. Strange but interesting. The palate is full bodied. Sweet cherries and prunes on the entry, followed by a sourness alongside hints of medicinal and savoury flavours - tomato soup, figs, sour cherries. Medium plus length. The tannins are now fine and well integrated. Good acidity provides significant length. Difficult to score this one as you will either love or hate. Lots of concentration and interesting flavours; but not elegant or fine as you would expect. It is definitely a Chianti on heat. Not really for me as I love the silkiness, refinement and subtle herbaceousness and shere drinkability of a good Chianti or Brunello. If you like big flavours and concentration then you will probably love it. Drinking well now and probably at peak now and for next 2-3 years.
