Wednesday, January 14, 2015 - Utterly uninteresting Napa cab in $35-40 range. You can pickup Napa Cab Sauv at a supermarket or Costco and get the same drinking satisfaction; sure the flavor profile won't be the same but this is about as middle of the road won't-often-anyone as it gets.

Save up and spurge on an $80 bottle or take a chance on 4 $10 bottles, either case will result in a more interesting experience.

Just to clear I do not hate this wine.

1/15/2015 6:28:00 AM - I also found this wine middling, but I thought that your asserted premise is also mistaken. There is a place for mid priced cabs because most don't want to drop $80+ on a bottle. As for 4 $10 cabs, I doubt it will be more interesting, as you are likely to get industrial plonk that tastes completely anonymous. As I said, at $30 this was no more than okay, but I can't tell anyone to buy 4 $10 cabs. Now, if you were careful you might have much more interesting times with 2 or 3 $15-$20 Bordeaux however.

1/16/2015 9:27:00 AM - I should have specified that the spurge and experiment is not limited to cabs. What I wanted to convey is for the price of 2 of these bottles you can should get a killer wine (cab or otherwise) but 4 $10 cabs would almost be disastrous. The 4 x $10 experiment would be Chilean, Argentinian, Spanish, and South African reds. Yes 3 out of 4 or even 7 out of 8 will be unmemorable but 1 should be (academically) interesting.

1/16/2015 9:47:00 AM - Honestly I seldom find much of interest at $10 anymore. Every once in a while I can score something good from the Loire at close to that price, but its rare. But raise that bar to $15 and I think it's definitely true. In any case, I didn't like this that much on its own. With a rib roast it did better but still paled in comparison to the Bordeaux on the table.
