Saturday, January 31, 2015 - This wine has a presence of greatness. It has a black opaque core with a mauve edge. The nose is closed straight after accessing it. There is only a monolithic aroma of pencil shavings. At 25 minutes there is more complexity with the addition of blackcurrant aromas. At an hour and at 17 degrees C the divine bouquet offers up lead pencil, blackcurrant, coffee, wet earth, rose petals, blueberries, jam, cafe au lait and cigar box. The palate is big but elegant. It is impeccably balanced. In addition to the aromas on the bouquet the palate has cherries, raspberries and liver pate. The length continues for 50 seconds. The tannins are prodigious but not harsh. It has a soft mouthfeel. It is a complete palate without flaw. The wine was drunk in Riedel bordeaux glasses between 17-21 degrees C. At 21 degrees C it started to lose precision and its tight structure confirming the importance of serving temperature. I am aware that this wine will last 70 years or more and will develop complexity but I am more than happy to drink it now. Is that heresy? NS
