Thursday, August 23, 2018 - This warm and ripe Cabernet blend seems a bit superficial to me right now - it's pleasing and likable, but it's also a little soft. Drinking this now is a little like watching Draymond Green his freshman year at Michigan State: the kid is a little pudgy and lacks an outside shot, but he has a work ethic and a knack for the ball. The question then was: how far can he go? The question is the same now as to this wine - and I can't quite tell at the moment.

Ruby red in color, full (almost milky) in body, and nose of cherry pie, anise, and baking spices, with a hint of warm straw. Tastes of boysenberry, milk chocolate, and vanilla, with a soft and lingering finish. 14.7% alcohol. Blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 23% Cab Franc. Decant at least an hour, since this deepened with air.

This is the first Outpost I've been able to follow at home, and I came away a little mixed. It has beautiful fruit (and is almost top heavy with it) - but I'm not sure if it has the tannin or acidity to develop into something more compelling. In TRB I trust (usually), so I'll cross my fingers that this develops over another year or two. I agree with csimm, though, that this deserves more time: the potential is there; now it just needs to slim down and work on that jump shot...

I love these wines but this felt just a little thin.

Some of these 2015s, at least from the valley floor (e.g., Carter, Maybach) are ready to go out of the gates, while some others just need time to develop. Let's cross our fingers, and see what happens...
