DoubleD1969 Does not like this wine:

Friday, January 25, 2019 - My friend, g-man, have never had Scarecrow (neither have I) and wanted to see what the big deal was.

Good Lord. If I were to drink this blind, I would have guessed an average-below average Amarone. Clearly, there are loads of fruit which seems to appeal to everyone, including myself. But what were off-putting were the excessive vanilla extract and not enough acidity to balance it and the fruit. Bad pairing with ribeye and most other food probably unless you are having panna cotta.

2/6/2019 1:40:00 PM - I wonder if the wine has shutdown. I've had a few 2015 single vineyards which were mind-blowing at release and almost intolerable at the moment (ex: Carter Cellars LPV). How long did you decant? Just FYI, Jan 25 & 26 were both "Root" days.

2/6/2019 2:19:00 PM - Good question. It was poured into a decanter and left open for about 2.5 hrs. We swirled it in the decanter periodically. Should we have put in a blender?

2/6/2019 3:13:00 PM - 2.5hours would seem like plenty of decant time. However, a really wound-up new vintage SV could probably use 6-8+ hours to unwind if shutdown. Either way, sorry to hear it was a bad experience, especially at that price point.

2/6/2019 3:38:00 PM - No reason to feel sorry JEP. I didn't pay for it! My guess (or hope) is that it needs some time. I tried an '04 Schrader Old Sparky last year, and it was delicious.

2/6/2019 5:53:00 PM - DoubleD, With Scarecrow wines, I recommend drinking them several (5+) years after release would be best. Most Scarecrow’s I have had are just too tight to enjoy on release for my palate. Just a recommendation for you if you get the chance to enjoy another. Wishing you all the best!

when it comes to ratings, many an see past the tightness of youth etc.. and rate a wine based on what it is, and maybe not what it is at the moment

many 100 pt wines are such....just not ideal conditions for you

the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

BTW I love a good Amarone
