Sunday, June 9, 2019 - Much has already been said about the '86 HB, but today's bottle was flawless. Slow-ox and settled for 2 hours, then poured from the bottle. Claret-colored, not too dark, no sign of bricking. Classic rich earthy leather and tobacco nose with a hint of eucalyptus and understated red fruits. First impact on the palate is smoky dark fruit, earth and stone, resolving to almost a madeira-like sweetness. Smooth and round, but with some tannic structure yet to go. We had a superb 1998 Spottswoode as well, but the HB overshadowed in every dimension.
