Sunday, July 21, 2019 - Purple fruit - currants/cassis, blackberry, dark raspberry, and a little blueberry. Solid depth/concentration, however, it came across a little tart and tannic. Tried to pop/pour but I didn't care for how it was showing so I threw it in a decanter for around one hour. A little improvement but still never fully came around. Put most of it away for day two.
Day two, big improvement - really smooth (seamless from beginning to end) and the tartness/tannicity did subside. In consideration of how it showed on day one, I believe this vintage needs some time which isn't a surprise in light of its youth. I'm going to lay my other bottles down for a year. 96 on day two and 93 on day one. 100% cab.

7/21/2019 11:38:00 AM - As you've probably heard from Mike Smith before, his wines quite often show more like a barrel tasting shortly after bottling with some of that "baby fat" still showing as he states - from my experiences typically 6 to 12 months after bottling. I believe many of the 2016s are starting to transition out of that phase. I actually had a bottle of the 2016 Becklyn cab last night and kind experienced the same - I should have known better. I put most of it away for day two so hopefully it shows as well as the 2016 Quivet LPV on day two. Take care.

7/21/2019 12:55:00 PM - My sentiments almost spot on Badmonkey, this Cab is transitioning to a different phase in its developmental path. But I will say that personally, I don't mind the baby fat. I love the high octane and the ramped up extraction and fruit when it's in the right proportions and Mike seems to have the "Midas Touch" when it comes to those pop and pour Cabs. In the meantime, hold on to those extra bottles of Las Piedras, the journey for this vintage should be interesting. BTW: I popped a 2016 Myriad Round Pond last night and it showed nicely, but it seems that the acidity is starting to ramp up just a bit. Despite the acidity, this is an excellent first year Cabernet from this appellation.

7/21/2019 1:46:00 PM - Yack Man, I hear you - I tend to prefer Mike's entry level cabs really young and still in that barrel tasting phase because of the flavors and depth/concentration. I would probably include the Myriad G3 as well. Interesting that the 2016 Myriad Round Pond is starting to pick-up some acidity. I opened a 2016 Becklyn cab last night and it came across a little disjointed - the fruit wasn't as smooth/seamless as previous bottles. Put most away for tonight - hopefully it improves on day two like the Quivet LPV. Take care.
