Sunday, August 11, 2019 - Gauby's Vieilles Vignes-bottling is a perennial favourite of mine, adding just that extra weigth to the Calcinaires to qualify as a grand vin.
This bottle is no difference. An elegantly translucent ruby colour, quite some sediment. In the nose already an expressive melange of super ripe, confected dark fruits, iron and something feral and sweaty. In the mouth the wine is all about power without weigth. Medium-bodied, fresh, pure, but with nice extract, sweetness and length, supported by substantial, but very fine-grained tannin. Aromatically the wine shows some evolution, is ready to go with a little air, but will keep for several more years. Pleasingly low alcohol (13%).
It is a wine full of character, somehow being a cross between a northern rhone Syrah and a Brunello di Montacino with even a bit Chateau Musar about it?!
