Sunday, July 12, 2020 - I discovered this chateau rather late (around 2018) in my search for the top chateaux in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I’m very glad that our tour guide introduced us to one of the oldest establishments in the appellation. Ordinarily, they’d make their wine quite traditional in the old school manner. But this rendition is remarkably different. Dark garnet hues turning brilliant ruby violet at the rim with a transparent edge. The legs show an unusually high viscosity, and confirmed by the label which indicates 15% of alcohol. The nose gives off ripe blackberry, candied raspberry and smoked baking spices. The palate is plush, seamlessly integrated with just enough acidity to carry the ripe fruit notes all the way to the long, dusty finish with hints of toasted oak vanilla. This is a delight. Very elegant and a crowd pleaser. Drink now until 2030.
