Sunday, May 21, 2023 - This pours very light garnet in the glass. The nose is fully mature, maybe a touch past prime, but still alive. Aromas are of worn leather, rusty iron, beef blood, mushroom, mint, decaying cedar, dried red currant, dried cranberry, brown sugar, and a faint whiff of rose petal. The palate is bright and elegant, prominently featuring the red fruit, with medium plus acid and low dusty tannin. Just a fabulous mouthfeel and more vibrant on the palate than the nose. The finish closes on decaying cedar and tart and sweet cranberry with a touch of iron. All in all this is showing nicely. Quite mature and near end of life. A far cry from the mesmerizing 1980 I enjoyed a few years back, but still quite nice.
