Sunday, August 20, 2023 - I was having trouble deciding to rate this as closer to "extremely acceptable and enjoyable" or "beginning to really stand out from the pack in terms of QPR". For my scale, I went with the latter. This is just damn delicious and fairly complex for the price, often around 40 bucks, and would be a very solid buy at 50 also. It could use a few years to integrate a little more, as the oak is quite powerful right now and the structure is a bit rustic, but still, excellent and engaging. Present nose with lots of cedar, a bit of caramel and golden toast supporting faint black plum and fresh blackberry, darker-hued but not even close to overextracted, and not needlessly green either. There's a little touch of tobacco and coffee for an earthy accent that's absolutely never overwhelming, even with some coarse tannin on the finish. Was even better on day two as the fruit came out to play a little bit more. Feels like a cross between a rich Napa "flavor profile" and old-world nuance/structure- without canceling each other out.
