Wednesday, February 8, 2023 - Château Malartic-Lagravière, Pessac-Léognan, 2020: After a couple (extremely) impressive kosher cuvées in 2016/18, here is a more classic vintage which reminds me a bit of the 2004, although the quality here is still superior. Indeed, all the improvements and investments in the winery over the past two decades are paying off. Deep, inky purple in color. On the nose, notes of crushed blackberries and raspberries, followed by hints of wood smoke, tar and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, with a silky, elegant mouthfeel. The palate shows notes of tart, juicy black and red fruit, graphite, smoky tobacco, hints of wet earth, black licorice, medium-plus acidity, with tight-grained tannins, and a touch of fins espresso on the long and polished finish. Not as layered as the past few vintages but certainly promising, and I anticipate some serious evolution! 13.5% Abv. Drink 2030-2045, possibly longer. 92+
