Thursday, November 9, 2023 - Following up a 1999 Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru is no easy task, but if any bottle was up to it, it was this great vintage from Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Still young in its profile, the wine took about half an hour / an hour to get going, but once it did, a nose dominated by earthiness and tobacco lured us in. The palate, though, was where the complexity shone as an upfront of dark cherries and blackcurrants quickly became more rustic as the mid-palate introduced notes of truffle, spices, herbs and hints of leather. The finish saw a renaissance of fruit as notes of plum rang through over a lingering end. This isn't at its peak yet, but is close and will prove to be one of the stars of 1996.
