Wednesday, December 20, 2023 - I have been a fan of this wine since the 1990 vintage. This was, unfortunately, my last bottle of the 1990 and it has been a long time since I had the previous 1990. It needed about 10-15 minutes to clean up on the nose but then it was a crowd pleaser. Medium garnet colour, slightly opaque. Pure Sangiovese nose of forest floor and dark cherry. There is a lot of complexity to the nose and kept changing over the three-hour lunch and ending up with nice earthy notes. Purest fruit at about two hours after opening. The palate was balance, pure, structured, with virtually no tannins, yet no lack of structure. Though the nose began to fade the palate balance hang on till the last drop. Such elegance. I wonder and I worry about what the newer versions of this wine at 15.% plus alcohol will be like after 33 years.
