Thursday, February 1, 2024 - A deep ruby blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, Vieux Château Mazerat's 2019 iteration offers a loaded olfactory platter of chocolate-covered cherries, dark bramble fruits, cassis, mulling spices, lavender and cedar. Full-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity and with well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%), it delivers ripe flavors that mirror the aromas, framed with toasted oak and plentiful fine-grained tannins. Layered on the mid-palate and lengthy on the back end, this is a modern-style Saint-Émilion that will have many fans. There is plenty of stuffing here to ensure that this wine will have significant longevity. Sampled over a two-hour period from a bottle that had been Vinturi-decanted three hours prior, it remained stable on the nose and palate throughout the entire tasting interval. Although I suspect that it did not necessarily need this much air, I am certain that it did not hurt. Drink now-2044.
