Saturday, March 16, 2024 - Third bottle from a half case purchased in 2002. Pristine condition. Not decanted, opened two hours in advance. Mature but lively appearance; smoky and spicy nose, cedar and tobacco, red berries and gravel, whiffs of chocolate and farmyard, good depth; the clear and transparent palate is too light for a wine of this stature, but it is vibrant and youthful, energetic and fresh, with light but sticky tannins; the finish is on the dry side with a touch of liquorice. Markedly different from the previous two bottles from the same half case, but the overall verdict is consistent: an attractive Saint-Julien that lacks power.
