Sunday, May 5, 2024 - Mouton Rothschild 1988, last bottle from a dear friend who kept if for decades in his cellar. The 1988 is not the most prestigious vintage so we were anxious to find out how this bottle would perform. The cork was quite a challenge as my friend tried to pull it with the spoons only, that did not work, the cork broke, but fortunately the Durand managed to pull out the remainders without a problem.
The first glass started with an aged nose, some acidity, wet soil and mushroom, the first sip was a bit thin, showing age with tertiary tones, not bad at all, bit not quite at 1er Cru level. The second glass was very different with cherries in the nose and opulent red fruit on the palate, almost Amarone like, with still some tannins, really beautiful and unexpected. The third glass blew us away, Mouton at its best, fullly melted, very complex, fruit and acidity in complete harmony, layered and length. Incredible beauty and such a strange and extraordinary experience, I never before had a bottle that developed so much in just over two hours.
