Thursday, November 5, 2009 - I really enjoyed this wine. I did not find its ripeness and forwardness to be offensive. It changed from day 1 to day 2, and I preferred day 2.

Day 1- initial pop and pour offered intense aromas of ripe cherries and other red fruits. Some dough on the nose that blew off quickly. With lots of swirling this offered gobs of fruit preserves and jam. The mouth was medium to full bodied with (surprisingly) silky tannins and good depth of fruit. The finish was ripe and delicious with a nice lingering note of cracked pepper and smoke.

Day 2 offered more black fruits on the nose than red fruits. The nose also picked up an earthy complexity that I welcomed. The mouth was about the same, and the finish had a nice chocolatey component.

This would probably overwhelm most food given its gobs of jammy fruits and 16% alcohol, but I enjoyed it as a sipper on day 1 and an accompaniment to beef vegetable soup and grilled cheese on day 2.
