An utterly good surprise, the '03 Monbousquet happened to taste French, of Merlot and evoke its St. Emilion origins! Perhaps a bit more plush and forward than the usual St. Emilion --certainly a modern-styled wine, this lovely and balanced wine still managed to maintain excellent balance between fruit, acidity and tannin. On the nose were lovely, elegant aromas of cassis, subtle vanilla oak, tobacco, smoke and plums. One the palate were fresh, tobacco tinged layers of currant fruit which on the finish took on an almost mineral-laced quality. A superb wine that is fully mature and has 10 more pleasure-giving years left. Excellent!
