93 Points

Friday, May 5, 2006 - My nephew, ATBridge, and I had one of his bottles of '83 LB last night with some cheese and pate. We were both extremely pleased. AT uncorked the bottle and let it sit open for a couple of hours but did not decant. Our experience with older wines has demonstrated to us that decanting can dissipate aromas and tastes too rapidly. We were both impressed with the freshness of this 23-year old wine. The color had some expected bricking but was not brown like some '82's I've had. The tannins were resolved, everything was balanced. There were strawberries and raspberries on the pleasant but moderate nose. I agree with the reviewer who said the nose dissipated but refreshed with each pour -- it did for us, too. The palate, however, while not big was very interesting: a core of classic Bordeaux (cassis, cedar, graphite, earth), with evolving hints of strawberries, plums, coffee and -- unexpectedly -- watermelon (that's what I called it -- it was a sweet, melon-y taste, at least). Again, our overall impression was young, fresh and fruity around a classic, structured core. The wine has probably peaked but we think should stay in good shape for awhile. We agreed this would be a good wine with an elegant meal of just about anything, probably not as good with big cuts of red meat as would be a lot of Bordeaux. We're really glad AT has two more bottles of this! Not sure why the reviews posted here are so divergent, but different things can happen to bottles over a couple of decades I guess.
