Monday, July 3, 2006 - This was my first sampling of G. Conterno Franscia. Very, very different. The color was a slightly bricky ruby. When first uncorked (pristine cork, hardly stained), there was absolutely no nose. After decanting and swirling a good bit, there was mucho horse poop "aroma" emanating from the decanter. The palate was mostly tannins. After 3 hours, however, delicate fruit began to appear, plus lots of woodsy, forest floor smells and tastes. As the evening evolved, the expected tar and roses became evident, but the dominant feature on nose and palate was mushrooms! The tannins slowed, and the finish became a long, harmonious, complex study of earth and rusticity. Wow, what a different animal! I want to try this again in a few years just to see what happens.
