Friday, January 7, 2011 - BW/WE Annual Riesling Dinner (Golden Beach Seafood Restaurant, Changi Golf Club): Third time with this wine, and it was probably the best showing. Dumped into the decanter for barely an hour, it was still amazingly young and tight, but boy, it was gorgeous old school stuff. Lovely nose showed floral notes of violets, lavender and garrigue layered over dark fruited black cherry and blueberry scents. The palate matched the nose stride by stride. Still so tight, clearly with lots of inner workings still coiled tightly around the mid-palate, but even then, there were lovely flavours of sappy dark cherries and black berries, spice and earth, some meaty notes, all clean, pure and juicy and wrapped around the most velvety of tannins. Classy stuff. After all the big, modern Grenache-fueled CdPs we have had recently, this was such a wonderful relief. Nice concentration, good fruit sweetness, yet not a touch confected or alcoholic. It went beautifully with our pork chop dish too. I enjoyed it very much on the day. However, unlike many of the 2000s, which have started opening up very nicely, this wine has some way to go yet. I would probably pin 2015 as a good time to start popping bottles.
