Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - Very interesting experience with this wine. I opened my 1st bottle about 2-3 years ago - perhaps late 2008 and as I recall, it was very lean back then. Don't recall much beyond that, but hoped that my second and last bottle would evolve. Fast forward to mid 2011 and this has totally filled out into a massively expressive shiraz. Popped an poured. Color was a beautiful deeply opaque brownish-purple with browning at the edges due to its age (10 years old). Nose of sweet cigar box and spicy dark fruits. As it opened up, I got more fruit and meat. 1st taste was a mouthful of different flavors but the most striking impression was the surprising mouth-puckering acidity that first gripped the sides of my tongue. Not at all a fruit bomb, butl a HUGE Shiraz with tons of complex flavors. Herbs and meat, tobacco, perfumed spice, cocoa and mocha swirl around an understated core of sweet dark dried cassis and blackberry fruits. Well-balanced Long-finish reminded me of a tawny-port though not as sweet. Very full-bodied and mouth coating. Slightly hot due to 15% but generally well-masked by all of the deep flavors.

While not my preference stylistically, I certainly appreciate that this is a special bottle of Shiraz. Happy to have experienced an Australian classic.
