Sunday, December 4, 2011 - Some kind of good. Ridge Geyserville has been the wine my wife and I drink when we trim our Christmas tree for maybe the past 15 years. Usually we do these when they are 5 years or younger. This year ridge sent us a bottle of the 2003 from the library. We're in their club. Truth be told, I worried about it. 2003 was a bit of a shady year all over CA. I wondered if they just needed space in their cellar and wanted to blow out some stuff that was maybe dying. You all know that happens. The cork didn't come out easy for my wife. And she's plenty experienced. So we decanted it and ran it through a screen. Then the tree fell over and we had to work on that so it was a half hour, maybe 45 minutes before we poured a glass. It's old for zin. And it doesn't smell like a fruit bomb. A combination of earthy tones and dark fruit but no jam, no expectation of sugar. Complex flavors of earth and dark fruit. Good stuff.
