Thursday, March 1, 2012 - Decanted for 3 hours. Nose of earth and sweet cherries, somewhat struggling to surface. On the palate, velvety, still dense and structured, but not unpleasantly so. It is beautifully balanced by ripe red fruit, coffee, dried herbs, a forest floor component, and a lively level of minerality and tannins. We all were surprised by the continuing youthfulness of this 22 year old wine. It should definitely morph into a wine of more subtlety with an abundance of tertiary notes, but, I must say, it is a gorgeously complex wine now and was magical with the braised lamb's neck at Herbsaint.
